We learn new things with every day that passes by, things from the future, things from the past and every once in a while we come across something so unbelievable and unrealistic that hardly anyone can believe it’s true. One such story comes from ancient Mesopotamia, from scholars all across the globe which have uncovered copies of an ancient manuscript, dubbed the Sumerian King List, which describes in details how back in the ancient times Earth was ruled by 8 mysterious kings for a period of 241 000 years. If that’s not enough, the manuscript also says the kings ‘descended from the heaven’.
The Sumerian King List is a remarkable manuscript but one that’s hard to believe it’s true.
“…After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridug. In Eridug, Alulim became king; he ruled for 28800 years. Alaljar ruled for 36000 years. 2 kings; they ruled for 64800 years…”
“…In 5 cities 8 kings; they ruled for 241,200 years. Then the flood swept over…” this is what the first part of the Sumerian King List says.
But how can 8 kings rule the Earth for 241 000 years? That can’t be true, right?
According to experts, the answer is rather simple in fact, the list mixes prehistorical and ‘mythological dynastic rulers,’ who enjoyed implausible lengthy reigns with more plausibly historical dynasties. What they are saying actually is that some of the things written in the manuscript are true and correct, while other things like the impossibly long reigns are just exaggerations.
Moreover, the manuscript doesn’t only say that these kings ruled for tens of thousands of years but it specifically says they ‘descended from heaven’ and afterwards their reign begun. Furthermore, the list explains in detail how these kings perished during the Great Flood that annihilated almost the entire humankind. Then it goes on to say that after the flood ‘another kingship was lowered from heaven,’ new kings whose kingship continued for a long time.
So, what’s the real truth? Is this ancient manuscript a combination of stories about historically accurate kings and mythological beings? Or maybe scholars didn’t know how to explain the existence of these long-lived kings and decided they must be mythical creatures.
For a long time, it has been believed that the stories of these incredibly long-lived kings, their eventual demise, and their replacement were simply the mythology of the ancient civilization who compiled the Sumerian King List. However, some have speculated that the text might not be mythology at all. The fact that the kings are said to have descended from heaven has led a few people to suggest that they might have been of an otherworldly origin. This would mean that their incredibly long reigns over the cities might be literal rather than metaphorical as these alien beings might have had much longer lifespans than human beings. They may have even been immortal.
What is the real truth? Are these ancient manuscripts proof that our Earth was ruled by ancient immortal beings from another planet or is the Sumerian king list just a mixture of historical records and mythology. It should be mentioned that the earliest listed king whose historicity has been archaeologically verified is Enmebaragesi of Kish, ca. 2600 BC.
